ENGAGEMENT

  • Lobbying Day: A current Student Government initiative, we want to make sure that Mason is represented at the Virginia General Assembly in Richmond so that the state continues to invest in higher education. The time and energy we put into lobbying makes a difference: this past year the General Assembly granted Mason $9 million. This money is important – it keeps YOUR tuition costs down!
  • Academic Advising: Make sure, first off, that ALL your academic advisors receive training, and are well equipped to advise YOU so that you can be the best student possible.
  • Partnership: Strongly encourage partnerships with local businesses and alumni to fund university research. This year, Student Government established a relationship with the Best Buy on Main Street, who donated for Student Government’s annual Witch Watch – we will work to form more partnerships like this at the university level.
  • Strong support for Class Councils, an initiative of Student Senator Mary Vertucci that will be implemented by Program Board next year.

Class Council Association mission statement:
“The Class Council Association serves the student body with the purpose of fostering School Spirit and Involvement and improving the quality of life for Students at George Mason University. The councils will serve as the overarching link between the students and their designated graduation year, and are the soul tradition creators of the university. They strive to create class identities, maintain student alumni relations to the university after graduation, and create an overall sense of unity and pride in the student body via interactive programming and engagement opportunities specifically for their respective class.”

Potential Class Council Association initiatives:

– Freshmen class formals

– Junior class ring dances

– An elaborate Senior Week for the senior class

– Senior class trips

– Class color wars

– To create at least one new tradition each year
